Charset HTML

HTML Encoding and HTML Character Sets are other names for HTML Charset. It is used to show an HTML page the right way because a web browser needs to know which character set (character encoding) to use in order to show anything the right way.

Character Encoding in HTML

Character Encoding comes in different forms, which are listed below:
Set of ASCII characters

American Standard Code for Information Interchange is what ASCII stands for. The ASCII standard was the first character encoding standard ever used in HTML. ASCII lets you use 128 different alphanumeric characters on the internet, including numbers (0–9), English letters (A–Z), and some special characters like! $ + – ( ) @ <> .

The biggest problem with ASCII encoding was that it only allowed a small number of characters. It is mostly made up of 128 characters.

Character Set for ANSI

The American National Standard Institute is what ANSI stands for. It is character set standard, which is an expanded version of the standard ASCII character set. It can handle 256 characters. ANSI is also called Windows-1252, and until Windows 95, it was the default character set for Windows.

Between ASCII and UTF-8

ASCII was the first standard for how to code characters. ASCII defined 128 different characters that could be used on the internet, including numbers (0–9), English letters (A–Z), and some special characters like! $ + – ( ) @ < > .

ISO-8859-1 was the character set that HTML 4 used by default. This character set had 256 different codes for characters. UTF-8 could also be used with HTML 4.

The first character set for Windows was ANSI (Windows-1252). The only difference between ANSI and ISO-8859-1 is that ANSI has 32 more characters.

The HTML5 standard tells web developers to use the UTF-8 character set, which includes almost all of the characters and symbols in the world.

Why does HTML4 also work with UTF-8?

HTML 4 also supported UTF-8 because ANSI and ISO-8859-1 were so limited.

UTF-8 is used as the default character encoding for HTML5.

UTF-8 syntax for HTML4:

<meta http-equiv=\”Content-Type\” content=\”text/html;charset=ISO-8859-1\”>

UTF-8 syntax for HTML5:

<meta charset=\”UTF-8\”>

Character Sets Have Their Own Differences

The ASCII Character Set

  • Control characters in ASCII use the numbers from 0 to 31 and 128.
  • Letters, numbers, and symbols in ASCII are given values from 32 to 126.
  • The numbers from 128 to 255 are not used by ASCII.

The ANSI Character Set (Windows-1252)

  • From 0 to 127, both ANSI and ASCII are the same.
  • For the values from 128 to 159, ANSI has its own set of characters.
  • From 160 to 255, both ANSI and UTF-8 are the same.

The ISO-8859-1 Character Set

  • Between 0 and 127, ISO-8859-1 and ASCII are the same.
  • The values from 128 to 159 are not used in ISO-8859-1.
  • Between 160 and 255, ISO-8859-1 and UTF-8 are the same.

Character Set UTF-8

  • UTF-8 and ASCII have the same values from 0 to 127.
  • The numbers from 128 to 159 are not used by UTF-8.
  • Between 160 and 255, UTF-8 is the same as both ANSI and 8859-1.
  • UTF-8 has more than 10,000 different characters after the value 256.
